The focus of this study was to better understand constraints toattendance in basketball at the Division III level. The study looked at attendance to Division III basketball overall, Division III men’s basketball, and Division III women’s basketball. Within these constructs the study further examined differences in influential constraints between men’s and women’s basketball, male and female spectators, and attendees and non-attendees. Results showed that Financial Cost was the highest ranked constraint factor within the study, and that Distance Travelled to Arena was the highest ranked constraint item within the study. The ability to better understand factors that negatively impact spectator sport consumption will allow sport marketers to more effectively promote their sport offerings, and increase attendance to Division III basketball.
